6217 Ptarmigan Bay and Shoal Lake

The further you are from the influence of man, the more wildlife you'll see.  It's a simple relationship that we understand.  Being nestled into the forest on one of the largest lakes in North America gives us an advantage but there are other reasons why we have so much wildlife here.

Lake of the Woods is fed by the Rainy River, Shoal Lake, Kakagi Lake and other smaller rivers. The lake drains into the Winnipeg River and then into Lake Winnipeg.

Lake of the Woods is over seventy miles long and wide, and contains over 15,000 islands and 65,000 miles of shoreline - the longest coastline of any Canadian lake.  The lake boasts some of the best bass, walleye and muskie fishing in the world.

The lake's islands provide nesting habitat for the endangered Piping Plover and large numbers of American White Pelicans. There are also several hundred nesting pairs of Bald Eagles in this area.

Lake of the Woods is totally unique in that there are three completely different geographical regions that intersect directly on the lake.  The west end of Lake of the Woods harbours the "Prairie Grasslands" region.  The southern and eastern areas of the lake contain more hardwoods and

Fish

Lake of the Woods is home to many species of freshwater fish.  You can expect to find small mouth bass, perch, walleye, northern pike, and big muskies.

Deer

Our area is famous for trophy sized deer.  You can hunt right around our area or ask us for a guided tour to some of the deer hot spots.  The 2006 year has seen deer populations rise to levels not seen in many years.

Moose

The Kenora area is famous for large game hunting.  We routinely book both small and large hunting parties that have excellent success rates on their hunts.

Waterfowl

It is common for our guests to go to bed at night with a glowing sunset and the sounds of loons in the bay out front of the camp.  The same wildlife will be their to wake you up with the sun early in the morning.  Photographers seem to love these beautiful birds.  Ducks, grouse, and Canadian Geese are abundant in our area.

Other Wildlife

Our forests are teeming with activity year round.  When you nature walk on one of our trails or spend time on the lake, you are likely to see...

  • Rabbits
  • Pine Martins
  • Foxes
  • Chipmunks & Squirrels
  • Snakes
  • Birds
  • Racoons
  • Turtles
  • Eagles & Hawks
  • ....and more!

Remember to bring your camera when you book your next holiday.
